The Society is an independent Nebraska state agency that is directly governed by a fifteen-member board of trustees. The Society is also a membership organization. Members elect twelve trustees, four from each of the state's three congressional districts, to staggered three-year terms. Three trustees are appointed by the governor, one from each congressional district. Nominations are made by a board-appointed nominating committee. A liberal petition process allows other names to appear on the mail-in ballot. List of board members, effective January 1, 2009.
