I started working
on a manageable sketch board that would enable me to do lightning
sketches and paintings right on the spot of jazz in action, portraying
the musicians at work, drawing and painting "on the beat"
if you will. -- John Falter

Untitled
John Falter
lithograph, from the "Jazz from Life" series, 1971
Falter combined individual portraits
into a composite group for this print from his "Jazz from
Life" series. Xylophonist Peter Appleyard is recognizable
at lower left.
British born vibraphonist Peter
Appleyard led groups of his own both in Canada and the United
States. He has recorded with numerous artists, including Peanuts
Hucko and Bucky Pizzarelli.
Appleyard's flying hair and the
multiple positions of mallets effectively convey action.
