The primary function of the Nebraska State Historic Preservation Office is to assist communities in preserving significant buildings, sites, and structures that convey a sense of community history. Public education is the most powerful tool available to the Nebraska State Historic Preservation Office in this regard. The Nebraska State Historic Preservation Office staff spends considerable time conducting public meetings and workshops and disseminating information to the public. The Nebraska State Historic Preservation Office can provide information to teachers to help design and implement classroom strategies that teach students the value of their local history and heritage. Help is also available at the National Park Service webpage, Teaching with Historic Places.
Our goal is to assist local individuals, groups, and governments to understand, promote, and preserve historic properties. The Nebraska State Historic Preservation Office advocates not only the self-evident aesthetic advantages of historic preservation, but also the potential of preservation to help promote economic development, community planning, tourism, environmental sensitivity, and land-use planning.
