BACKGROUND NOTE

Henry Gund was born in Baden, Germany in 1841 and came to the United States as a small boy. The family settled at Freeport, Illinois. In 1864 he joined in the gold rush and went to California, but made his fortune as a wagon maker, a craft that was much in demand on the Pacific coast. In 1876 he settled at Wilber, Nebraska and engaged in the grain business, with banking as a side line. He was the founder and organizer of the Blue Valley Bank of Wilber. His banking venture proved so successful that he branched out and increased his holdings. He was president of the First National Bank of Blue Hill; Saline State Bank of Wilber; Bank of Campbell, Bank of Rosemont; Cowles Bank of Cowles, and the Upland Banking Company of Upland, Nebraska. He was also one of the organizers (on June 27, 1899) and directors of City National Bank of Lincoln, as well as a major shareholder.

In 1893 he moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where he resided until his death on January 17, 1924. He was a very active man at the time of his death, having attended several bank directors meetings shortly before he died. He was a member of the Lincoln Elks at 75. A son, Fred, and two daughters, May and Edna, survived him.
