SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of correspondence and a few miscellaneous items, 1958-1970, relating to Howe's interest in sites related to the Cheyenne Outbreak of 1879; in particular the burial sites of the Cheyenne victims. Includes carbon copies of Howe's outgoing letters, as well as replies from a wide variety of people and agencies concerned with Native American affairs.

Note:  See the moving image component [RG1637.MI] for Howe's home movie footage capturing scenes from the September 1934 event billed as "The Last Great Gathering of the Sioux Nation." The gathering took place at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, in conjunction with the dedication of twin monuments to the memories of Lt. Levi Robinson and Oglala Chief Crazy Horse.
