BACKGROUND NOTE

Augustus Theodore Haase, born in Hanover, Germany, on May 5, 1835, came to the United Sates in 1848 and settled first in Virginia where he learned the carpenter trade beginning in 1850. He moved to Dakota City, Nebraska, on June 12, 1858, to pursue his trade. He became a reputable builder and contractor for Dakota City and the surrounding area. He constructed the first Lutheran Church at Dakota City in 1860, and built the Dakota County Courthouse, 1870-1871. Mr. Haase was treasurer of Dakota City for twenty-five years, a member of the Dakota City Improvement Company, president of the Pioneers and Old Settlers Association, and chairman of the committee in charge of the Dakota County exhibit at the Sioux City, Iowa, corn palace in 1890. He was a founder and trustee of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dakota City. Haase married Louisa Eckhart on December 8, 1864. They had a daughter, Mrs. D.M. Neiswanger, and two sons, George H. and Frank F., both of Emerson, Nebraska. Mr. Haase died on August 27, 1920.
