SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of photocopies of writings, 1883-1917, of J.L. Emerson. The originals are not part of the Nebraska State Historical Society collections. Most of the articles were written in 1883 under the pseudonym, Stubin Twist. These writings appeared in the Blue Valley Blade (Seward County, Neb.) under the title "On the Wing." They describe Emerson's observations on a journey through northern Nebraska into Dakota Territory and cover topics such as settlement, agriculture, commerce, weather, and landscapes. Among the other writings are letters to the editors of the State Journal and the Star (Lincoln, Neb.), including a witty, rhyming commentary on brothers Charles and William Jennings Bryan.
