James Warren Johnson, son of Gilbert W. and Mary Elizabeth (Geer) Johnson was born on December 16, 1858, in Tennessee. By 1870, the family lived to Sheffield, Bureau County, Illinois, where James W. Johnson married Melissa (Lilly) Jane McCullough in January 1879. The following year, the Johnson's settled on a farm west of Dorchester in Saline County, Nebraska, where they lived for the next fifty years. Besides farming, Johnson increased his income by blacksmithing, threshing, doing carpentry, and by engaging in a variety of other tasks. James W. Johnson died on May 27, 1930.


This collection consists of five account books dating from 1878-1900. This collection relates to money earned and spent by James W. Johnson, a farmer of Dorchester, Saline County, Nebraska. The account books reflect Johnson's income and expenses during his early years on a farm near Dorchester. The accounts show money taken in and expended on products that he sold or purchased, as well as work that he did for others. Prices indicate the cost of living in rural Nebraska at that time. A name index is provided.
