BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

John S. McCarty, son of Milburn and Mary McCarty, was born at Mason, Illinois on June 10, 1869. When he was ten years of age, his parents moved to Nebraska locating at Peru and later Auburn. John attended rural school and afterward the Peru Normal school, completing his studies at Kirksville, Missouri. After completing his law course, McCarty was married to Jeanette Harmon in 1893. For the next four years, the McCartys lived in Tekon, Washington, where McCarty practiced law. Apparently, at least for part of 1897, he maintained a law practice in Omaha, Nebraska as the 1897 Omaha City Directory shows that his law office was in the U.S. National Bank Building. By 1898 McCarty was in Auburn and he entered politics, serving two terms as County Judge and then a term as Mayor. After retiring from the office of County Judge, McCarty entered into partnership with Judge H. S. Lambert. This partnership lasted nine years, until McCarty moved to Lincoln where he formed a six-year partnership with George W. Berge. Around 1920 he formed a partnership with George E. Huger. John S. McCarty died in Lincoln on November 19, 1922.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of three letterpress books dating from 1897-1900. This material relates to the legal practice and political activities of John S. McCarty, a lawyer in Auburn, Nebraska. Correspondence from 1897 was written from Omaha where apparently McCarty maintained an office. Later correspondence was written from Auburn. Most of the legal correspondence is in regard to the collection of the financial claims of his clients. The political correspondence reflects McCarty's role as a party organizer for the Democratic Party in Nemaha County. (Due to the "lightness" of the type, much of volume one is illegible.)
