BACKGROUND NOTE

Lucy Ann Schofield was born in Morrison, Illinois, on September 15, 1862. Around 1879 her father took out a homestead in what is now Red Willow County, Nebraska, and the family relocated there. Her father died within the first year of the family's relocation, and when her mother and siblings decided to return east to Iowa, Lucy stayed and married James M. Lyon in Indianola on September 20, 1880.

Lucy and James Lyon settled on the Lyon family homestead two miles east of Trenton. Their first child, Bertie, was the first white child born in Trenton. Ten more children were born to the Lyons. After James Lyon's death on September 5, 1911, Lucy Lyon moved from the family homestead to the town of Trenton. She died there on January 14, 1931.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of two folders of manuscript material arranged in two series: 1) Reminiscences, 1931 and undated; and 2) Land Records, 1882-1919. These materials relate to the life of Lucy A. Lyon as a homesteader near McCook, Red Willow County and Trenton, Hitchcock County, Nebraska.

The Reminiscences of Series 1 include an undated memoir dictated by Lucy A. Lyon. Lucy describes her family's relocation from Illinois to their new homestead near present-day McCook, Red Willow County, Nebraska; experiences on her husband's 700-acre cattle ranch after her marriage; challenges of life on the Nebraska frontier in the 1880s; and the development of Trenton, Nebraska. This series also includes a reminiscence written by Leonard T. Park that appeared in The Progress (Culbertson, Nebraska) on September 17, 1931. This memoir mentions James Lyon. The Land Records, 1882-1919, of Series 2 consist of land certificates and a deed record for land owned by various members of the Lyon family.
