BACKGROUND NOTE

Mildred Brown was the founder and publisher of the Omaha Star, a community leader, and an advocate of civil rights in Omaha, Nebraska. This collection relates to Brown's career and contributions to civil rights and the city of Omaha.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists primarily of copies from a scrapbook containing correspondence, May-June 1984. The correspondence, written to and about Mildred Brown, relates to her accomplishments as a community leader, civil rights activist, and publisher of the Omaha Star in Omaha, Nebraska. The letters were written in conjunction with a public tribute honoring Brown for her support of minority causes and concerns. Two articles about Brown from the Sunday Omaha World-Herald are also included with the collection, but were not part of the scrapbook. The originals are not part of the Nebraska State Historical Society Collections. Only photocopies are available.

Note::  The photo componenet [RG5503.PH] consists of nine images of Mildred Brown in portraits, in meetings with politicians, and in group photographs. Most of the images date from the 1960s and relate to Brown's activities in civil rights and as publisher of the Omaha Star. The originals are not part of the Nebraska State Historical Society Collections. Only copies are available.
