Pickering Family

RG3683.AM:  Pickering Family

Genealogical materials:  1957-1971
Size:  0.5 cu.ft.; 1 box

BACKGROUND NOTE

The Pickering Family first settled in America when John Pickering left England for Portsmouth, New Hampshire around 1636. His descendants can still be found in the Portsmouth area, but many moved on to new settlements in the growing country. This collection follows the line of the Pickering Family that first settled in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and then moved on to the Little Kanawha Valley of West Virginia near Elizabeth, to the area around Canton, Illinois, and finally to Jefferson County, Nebraska, and Washington County, Kansas, on the Kansas-Nebraska border. This material was researched and compiled by Doane Turner Pickering of Lincoln, Nebraska, a descendant of the first Pickerings of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one box of manuscript material arranged in six series: 1) Correspondence, 1957-1971; 2) Genealogy Research Material; 3) Documents; 4) Pamphlets; 5) Newspapers, 1967 and 6) Miscellany. This material deals exclusively with the genealogy of the Pickering Family of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and other related families, such as the Turners, Carvers, and Ellsworths.

Series 1 consists of Correspondence, 1957-1971, written and received by Doane Turner Pickering of Lincoln, Nebraska, in his research into the Pickering Family history. This correspondence gives information on many members of the Pickering family and also provides information on the steps Pickering used in compiling his family history. Series 2 contains Genealogical Research Material including handwritten and typed notes and photocopied excerpts from various publications. The Documents of Series 3 include the Pickering Coat-of-Arms, maps, and copies of Pickering family members' indentures and other certificates. The Pamphlets of Series 4 discuss the Pickering House of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, streets, and homes in Old Salem, and Pickering Castle in England. Series 5 contains five issues of the English newspaper, The Pickering Gazette and Herald, 1967. The Miscellany of Series 6 includes newspaper and magazine clippings, travel information, and research methodology notes.
