International Women's Group (Lincoln, Neb.)

RG5595.AM:  International Women's Group (Lincoln, Neb.)

Records:  1962-1995
Lincoln, Lancaster County, Neb.:
Size:  1.0 cu.ft.

First organized in 1962 by members of the University of Nebraska faculty as part of the University Dames, the International Wives Friendship Group was created to meet the assimilation and linguistic needs of the wives of foreign students. The group focused on social interaction as well as orientation to the American way of life. In 1966 the group started a twice-monthly meeting schedule at First Presbyterian Church, established a nursery, and maintained an attendance of 40 women. The International Wives Friendship Group later changed its name to the International Women's Group. By the 1980s, membership had declined due to the fact that many of the group members had returned to work or school, and many of the foreign wives were better educated and more knowledgeable about living in the U.S.

The collection consists of the records of the administrative records for the International Women's Group. The bulk of the collection consists of committee records, membership and programming materials, and financial records. Also included are recipes and cookbooks, scrapbooks, and newspaper clippings.
