BACKGROUND NOTE

In 1947, Creighton University sponsored a Nebraska Recreation Conference that recommended that a governor's recreation conference should be held in order to create a State Advisory Committee on Recreation. Subsequent meetings with Governor Peterson were held and the governor believed a type of organization was needed in Nebraska for education and promotion of the state's parks and recreation ability. Small groups throughout the state continued meeting without any formal organization until February 3, 1961, at which time a steering committee of recreation-oriented persons met at the Lincoln City Recreation Office. The first official meeting occurred on September 16, 1961, at the Officers Club, Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, Nebraska. Robert Dula was elected president of the newly founded Nebraska Park and Recreation Association. The name was later changed to Nebraska Recreation and Parks Association to conform to the national-level namesake. The goal of the Nebraska Recreation and Parks Association is to help the citizens of Nebraska enjoy living in the state through promotion, education, legislation, adequate facilities, cooperation between the many agencies engaged in all related fields and services of parks and recreation, and extended planning for the future.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The records of the Nebraska Recreation and Parks Association are arranged into two series: 1) Historical Notebooks, 1961-1986, and 2) Topical Files.

Series 1 consists of three historical notebooks, their contents placed in folders and filed in order with division headings as they were created by the Nebraska Recreation and Parks Association. The first notebook is a compilation of documents throughout the first twenty years of the association's existence. The second notebook contains minutes, newsletters and workshops mostly from the 1970s. The third notebook contains the documents of the early 1980s.

Series 2 is composed of topical files, arranged in alphabetical order. The materials within most folders are arranged chronologically, with the most recent at the front of the folders. In general, the folders follow the original filing system of the N.R.P.A. There are multiple folders for groupings of subjects such as "Annual Conference" files, or the general "N.R.P.A." files.

Although there are general, chronological correspondence files, some correspondence may be found in other files with the material to which it relates. The "N.R.P.A." folders contain general materials such as minutes, financial records, and miscellaneous items, for each year listed.
