BACKGROUND NOTE

Mrs. I.M. Raymond founded the Thursday Morning Lecture Circle of Lincoln, Nebraska in 1904 after she visited a womanís lecture circle in Washington, D.C. The constitution of the Circle, first written down in the 1920s, stated that the Circleís purpose was to ìafford a means of self-improvement for its members.î This was done through the presentations of visiting lecturers discussing a wide variety of subjects. Through the years, the Lecture Circle depended upon faculty members of the University of Nebraska to supply speakers.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of the organizational records of the Thursday Morning Lecture Circle, including the constitution and by-laws, minutes of meetings, treasurerís reports, annual programs and membership lists. Also included is a typescript history of the Circle compiled by Clarice Keys Hicks in 1976. The history describes the Circleís founding as well as its programs and activities through the years. It also provides information on speakers and their subjects of presentation, and listings of officers for the organization.
