BACKGROUND NOTE

J.E. Conklin, a lifelong resident of Hubbell, Nebraska, was born on November 23, 1889. He received his education in local schools and at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire. He was a veteran of World War 1 and an active member of the American Legion. He became president of the Hubbell bank upon the death of his father in 1924. During the drought and depression of the 1930s, he saw the need for improvement in farming practices and installed the first terraces and contours in that area on his own farm. He continued his activities in soil conservation work and received many awards, including the Soil Conservation Certificate of Merit in 1960. He was elected to the State Legislature in 1943 and again in 1945 from the 22nd legislative district. He was active in church and community work and also in the Masonic and Elks Lodges. He helped the advancement of the Scouting program and was past president of the Native Sons and Daughters of Nebraska. Conklin died on July 31, 1965, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Survivors included his wife, Wilhelmina, a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Ruth) Denny, and a son, William J. Conklin.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one item, a scrapbook relating to J.E. Conklin's political career and to his agricultural and soil conservation activities, 1940-1956.
