Appraisals and Authentications of Objects


The staff of the Nebraska State Historical Society Museum Collections department does not appraise or authenticate artifacts. Our policy regarding appraisals and authentications is outlined in the Collection Policy Statement. (pdf)

The Nebraska State Historical Society staff or Board of Directors cannot set values or give opinions on the value of an object for tax purposes. Nebraska State Historical Society staff or board members may assist the donor in locating a qualified appraiser, but cannot recommend one appraiser over another. The Nebraska State Historical Society will provide the donating individual with paperwork that can serve as a receipt for Internal Revenue Service purposes. The Nebraska State Historical Society will not pay for the appraisal of donated items and any exceptions to this must be cleared by the Nebraska State Historical Society Board of Directors.

Staff of the Nebraska State Historical Society Museum Collections Department cannot make definitive statements regarding the authenticity of objects brought to them for identification by the public. Professional opinions or sources for information may be given.
