SUBJECT: Nebraska women's works featured in two exhibits, just in time for Women's History month.
Celebrate women's history month with a look at two exhibits at the Nebraska State Historical Society's Museum of Nebraska History that highlight the creative contributions Nebraska women have made to the state's cultural life.
"Nebraska Women Artists: 1885-1970," displays paintings, drawings and sculpture by nineteen artists, including Sarah Wool Moore, an early chair of the University of Nebraska art department; Elizabeth Dolan, whose murals grace the Nebraska State Capitol and other notable public buildings; and Gladys Lux, longtime art educator at Nebraska Wesleyan University. The exhibit was organized by guest curator Sharon Kennedy, of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Nebraska State Historical Society curator Deborah Arenz, and incorporates pieces from the Museum of Nebraska Art, the Sheldon, the Great Plains Art Museum and private collections as well as artwork from the Nebraska State Historical Society. The exhibit will be on display through October 2007. Guest curator Sharon Kennedy will present a noon-hour lecture on the research that uncovered these somewhat overlooked artists on Thursday, June 21.
Fabric was the medium of choice for some creative women. "Quilts A to Z," features quilts from Nebraska State Historical Society museum and International Quilt Study Center collections. Quilts will rotate every six months; "A is for Amish" through "G is for Goose Tracks" are currently on display through April 2007.
