History is ~Cool~ Again as Museum of Nebraska History Reopens Oct. 5, 2002.
The long, hot summer is finally over at the Nebraska State Historical Society's Museum of Nebraska History, 15th and P Streets, Lincoln. A complete air-conditioning system failure had caused the museum to curtail hours in June and then close completely in August. Work continues on repair of the system, but moderating temperatures make it possible to reopen to the public Saturday, October 5. The museum will resume its regular schedule of operation: Saturday and Sunday, 1 p.m.-4:30 p.m. and Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
The museum's History Adventure Center will offer hands-on learning for kids of all ages during regular museum hours. The museum store will return to its regular hours, 1 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
The monthly brown bag lecture series will return on Thursday, October 17 at 12 noon. Researcher John Carter will present "Where's the Beef?", a look at the pivotal role Nebraskans played in the development of the nation's taste for red meat.
Due to the museums closure this summer when the air-conditioning failed, some presentations in the monthly noon-hour Brown Bag Lecture series have been rescheduled. Just in time for Thanksgiving, Rene Botts, Curator of Anthropology will present "New World Foods," on Thursday, November 21. Cookbook author and noted wild foods expert Kay Young will
give tips on "Gathering and Cooking Wild Plants of the Great Plains" on Thursday, December 19.An exhibit scheduled to open October 1 in conjunction with the centennial of 4-H in Nebraska, "Still Making the Best Better," had to be canceled. An on-line version of the exhibit is being prepared for posting on the Nebraska State Historical Society's website.
