English Landmark Mysteriously Appears in Western Nebraska
In the summer of 1987 Jim Reinders, with the help of family members, built a replica of Stonehenge just north of Alliance along Highway 87. Carhenge consists of thirty-eight American-made automobiles, all painted gray, with dimensions and layout to mimic Stonehenge. Carhenge is now preserved and owned by the Friends of Carhenge. Additional automobile sculptures have been added to the site as part of the "Car Art Reserve."
