John B. Workman arrived in Nebraska in 1872, homesteading on Indian Creek in York County. He farmed there for several years and also served as postmaster of the Indian Creek Post Office. Workman moved to Exeter, Fillmore County, by 1886. He died there on April 23, 1895.

This collection consists of one item dating from 1872. The single letter, May 16, 1872, from John B. Workman was written from Friendville, Saline County, Nebraska to his wife and children in Illinois. In the letter, Workman describes the good quality of his land, the work being done to get his crops planted, the availability of cheap goods, groceries, and provisions, the lack of money and timber, and the plan for the house he is having built. A typed transcription of Workman's letter is included.

Note: The photo component of the collection consists of two photographic prints and one tintype. Shown is the Indian Creek post office, 1882; the Workman house in Exeter, Nebraska, 1886; and a tintype of a small child, 1871.
