Nicholas D. Fetterley was born at Starkville in Herkimer County, New York, on April 25, 1839. In 1855 he came with his parents to Illinois and was married to Mary Ann Newell on April 24, 1864, in Sycamore, DeKalb County, Illinois. On May 24, 1861, he enlisted in Company C of the 15th Illinois Volunteer Regiment and was discharged in December of 1863. He re-enlisted the following month and served for the duration of the war. He participated in the battle of Shiloh in April of 1862 and was with Sherman on his march through Georgia in the spring of 1864. In 1871 Fetterley moved to Nebraska and farmed near Bennet in Lancaster County until the mid 1890s. He then moved into Bennet where he lived until his death on February 3, 1921.


This collection consists of one reel of microfilm containing the diary of Nicholas D. Fetterley. The diary dates from 1861-1878 and consists of two parts. The first part, from November 19, 1861 through August 21, 1862, is an account of Fetterley's experiences in the Civil War. Written in a narrative style, many of the daily entries are quite lengthy and describe Fetterley's feelings about the events he mentions. The second portion of the diary covers the period March 6, 1866 through February 4, 1878, but is not complete. It has brief notations regarding financial transactions, personal loans, planting, and harvesting.
