This collection consists of four items relating to Thomas J. Allen's service as a Sheriff and as Captain in the Fort Calhoun Rangers in Washington County, Nebraska Territory.


  1. Certificate: Thomas B. Cuming, Acting Territorial Governor, appointing Thomas J. Allen as Sheriff of Washington County, December 25, 1854.
  2. Certificate: Mark W. Izard, Territorial Governor, commissioning Thomas J. Allen as Captain, 5th Comp. Calhoun Rangers, Aug. 15, 1855.
  3. Agreement: Nov. 19, 1855, signed by Thomas J. Allen and various members of the Calhoun Rangers, agreeing to become members and to abide by the rules of the Calhoun Rangers.
  4. Letter: Aug. 15, 1932, from the NSHS to the family regarding possible donation of the items.
