Clyde Vosburgh, a carpenter from Palmyra, Nebraska, was called to service in April 1898 and was mustered into "I" Co., 1st Nebraska Volunteers on May 10th. He was appointed to the rank of corporal, and on June 1, 1898 became sergeant. His unit left San Francisco on June 15, 1898 and arrived in the Philippine Islands approximately one month later. Vosburgh was injured at the Battle of Quingua on April 23, 1899 and arrived back in the United States on board the U.S.S. Hancock on July 31, 1899. He was mustered out of military service at the Presidio in San Francisco on August 23, 1899.


This collection consists of papers relating to Clyde Vosburgh's military service during the Spanish-American War and subsequent Philippine-American War. Of particular interest are the diaries of Clyde Vosburgh, in which he recorded comments from the date he was called to service until he returned to the United States. Also included in the collection are the Muster-Out Roll showing Vosburgh's military service record, certificates of appointment, a newspaper account of the Battle of Quingua, and maps of the Philippine Islands bearing comments in Vosburgh's handwriting and noting troop positions and actions.
