American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions

RG5537.AM:  American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions

Papers:  1830-1859
Nebraska Territory:  Religious organization
Size:  3 reels of microfilm

Organized by the General Association of Congregational Churches of Massachusetts in 1810, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions was formed to promote the žspread of the gospel in Heathen lands." The Board sent its first missionaries to Calcutta in 1812, and since that time, thousands of missionaries and other shorter-term workers have worked in countries all around the world. These missionaries regularly sent back letters, journals and reports in order to document their activities and observations.

Since 1944 the Houghton Library of Harvard University has housed and administered this vast archive of documents. In the 1980s, Research Publications Inc. (now Primary Source Microfilm, an imprint of the Gale Group) published portions of these papers in a microfilm edition. Permission to publish or quote from the documents on this microfilm must be obtained from both Harvard and the United Church Board of World Ministries.

For more information, contact the Curator of Manuscripts, Houghton Library, Harvard University.

This collection consists of three reels of microfilm of the papers of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. The reels contain letters, journals, and reports by missionaries documenting their activities and observations regarding various tribes, including the Pawnee Indians in the Nebraska Territory.
