Susan LaFlesche Picotte, born on the Omaha reservation in northeastern Nebraska in 1865, was the first Native American woman to earn a medical degree. She received her medical education and training in Philadelphia and returned to the Omaha reservation to provide medical services to the people there and in surrounding communities. She also worked hard to improve Nebraska's public health laws.
